The objects I make are abstract forms based on a combination of biological
and technological data & imagery. The ideas can come from surfing the
internet or reading a book on genetics. Usually I conceive an idea and then
translate it into glass, but occasionally a form will dictate the outcome .
Often I use a rounded wheel form for pieces. The wheel, to me, signifies
motion - movement - going forward and progressing. The shape is also
cellular and soft, the fragile material containing a wealth of information
which we are made of. The barcode is used to represent either our DNA or
technology. Have you ever noticed how similar a genetic fingerprint is to a
barcode!
Scientific advances
have developed at an astonishing rate over recent years, both in technology and
microbiology. Scientists have moved ever closer to unravelling the mysteries of our
genetic make-up, or DNA. Technology has moved so fast that we now communicate, globally,
at the press of a button. It seems that everything is getting faster and more compact.
It is these
breakthrough's, along with our increased understanding of genetics, medicine and biology,
coupled with the incredible complexities of computer technology, including the rapidly
developing Nano-technology, which inspires my work.
Why? because it is
exciting, challenging, frightening, unpredictable, bold, and adventurous, and because it
affects us all now or will do in the near future.
